History of the United Nations

The United Nations first began during World War II, when representatives wanted their governments to continue fighting against the axis powers. The name was given by Franklin D. Roosevelt as was first used in 1942. International organizations were first used to discuss specific matters, for example the International Telegraph Union and the Universal Postal Union. The International Peace Conference was held in 1899 to settle crisis peacefully and to prevent wars. At this conference, the Permanent Court of Arbitration was established and began work in 1902. Similar to the United Nations is the League of Nations, established in 1916, but fell apart beacuse it failed to prevent World War II from happening. The United Nations Charter was made in 1945 at the United Nations Conference on International Organization. The UN officailly existed in October 1945 when the charter was ratified. United Nations Day is celebrated on October 24.

UN General Assembly

The General Assembly was established under the Charter of the United Nations, and is the chied policymaking and part of the UN. It contains all 193 members of  the United Nations and provides a unique discussion for the international issues covered by the charter. The General Assembly plays a big role in setting the international laws. The General Assembly meets from September to December each year.

The General Assembly may make recommendations for keeping international peace and security, receive and consider reports from the Security Council, and it can consider and approve the United Nations budget. Each member of  the general assembly has one vote, where most issues are decided on majority.

  International Court of Jusice

The International Court of Justice is the main judicial organ of the United Nations. The court settles legal disputes and provides opinions on legal questions. The court is composed of fifteen judges elected by the General Assembly and the Security Council. The Court has the power to make its own rules, and the cases follow a similar pattern.

The seat of the court is located in the Netherlands, and it is the only principal organ of the United Nations not located in New York. It is assisted by a registry, and its official languages are English and French.

Family Issue of the UN

The UN calls the famiy the basic unit of society and they want to make sure that families aound the world are safe and protected from harm. Families are an issue to the UN because there are so many of them aound the world and it is the UN's responsibility to keep all of them safe from danger. This is an issue to the UN all over the world, since there are families all over the world. This issue concerns families, of course, but also children and mothers as they must be taken care of as well. The UN addresses this issue by not only taking care of the children and mothers of the families, but by also providing safe health and prevening HIV/AIDS. The UN provides many organizaions aimed to help families all around the world, such as UNICEF, the United Nations Childrens Fund, FAO, the Food and Aggriculture Organizaion of the United Nations, and WHO, the World Health Organizaion.

Permission

Mr.Wyckoff, I would like permission to create a UN club here at school. A Model UN club would be a good idea to have because it would help students to learn about the UN and what it is all about. The Model UN club would also get more kids involved in the global issues happening around the world in our time. A model UN club on the family issue of the UN would let students know how the UN helps out families.

Purpose statement:                                                                     The purpose of the Model UN club about the issue of families around the world is to educate students more about how the UN deals with and cares for families. The club would do fun activities that would get members excited about learning about how the United Nations takes care of families, women, and children all over the world.
