History of Egypt:
The modern history of Egypt is marked by Egyptian attempts to achieve political independence from the Ottoman Empire, then the British. Muhammad Ali attempted to create an Egyptian empire that extended to Syria and remove the country from Turkish control. British occupation took place in 1882, and remained the real power.
Political independece was finally achieved in between the 1952 Revolution and the 1956 War. In 1952, the Free officers took control of the government and removed the king from power. In 1956, the Egyptian president announced the nationalization of the Suez Canal, that resulted in the invasion by Britain, France, and Israel. Egypt prevailed, and the British troops were withdrawled.
Current Situation in Egypt:
The Egyptian Revolution began as a result of an uprising that took place in January 2011. The uprising was a campaign of civil resistance, featuring demonstrations, marches, acts of civil disobediance, and strikes. Many citizens demanded to overthrow the Egyptian president Mubarak.
The uprising took place in Cairo, Alexandria, and many other cities in Egypt. The Egyptain uprising followed the Tunisian revolution that resulted in the overthrow of the Tunisian president. Mubarak finally resigned from office in January 2011. The primary demands of protesters were the end of Mubarak's regime, and the end of emergency law; freedom, justice, and a responsive non-military government.
